An overview of betel in the us and worldwide
Betel USA is part of the larger work of Betel International which began in 1985 and is based in Madrid, Spain. The Betel recovery model harmonizes church-planting, residential living, and non-profit businesses in order to help desperate people heal and rebuild their lives based on Christian values and a strong work ethic.
Early in 1985, Betel (Spanish for Bethel) received its first destitute men and women off the streets of Madrid through the pioneering work of a team of WEC International missionaries.
Since that time, more than 150,000 homeless and socially disadvantaged men & women have been helped throughout Spain, Portugal, Italy, Germany, France, Czech Republic, Finland, Bulgaria, Central Asia, Russia, Kazakstan, Mongolia, North Africa, Australia, Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, South Africa and the UK. Today, Betel residences host more than 2,400 recovering men and women free of charge in 100 urban areas in 22 nations.
(To reach any of Betel’s dozens of centers worldwide, see the Betel International website.)
Betel USA will begin its pioneering work in Virginia Beach, VA, with the aim to grow into additional cities in the coming years. We are currently searching for a suitable property in which to set up our first men’s residence.
Betel USA’s vision is to restore homeless, addicted, and long-term unemployed people to healthy, independent lifestyles at no additional cost to the government, social services or families. In doing this, we train recovering people in a wide range of life and employment skills, equipping them to build a stable and productive future. All our residences are drug- and alcohol-free and totally free of charge. We offer the opportunity of restoration to all persons who seek our help, regardless of financial means.
Betel belongs or relates to various Christian alliances in most of the countries where we labor. We remain a ministry of WEC International and are founding members of ISAAC (the International Substance Abuse and Addiction Coalition). Here in the USA, we are linked with the One Focus church network and various churches across the East coast.
In every country where Betel operates, we work closely in partnership with many secular, governmental and private charities and institutions who provide similar or related services. We receive referrals of residents from a number of different agencies including: the Probation and Prison Services, the Courts, the Police, homeless hostels, local communities, other voluntary drug and alcohol projects, as well as churches and religious groups. Betel USA welcomes building similar partnerships across Virginia and beyond.
